Search Engine Tips
Search engines are a good place to start to get a feel for a topic. They use software to sort information, so it's easy for opinion and economic interests to pervade. Essentially, these databases will give you the broadest range of results possible.

TIPS - use only key words like "california proposition 65" rather than "explanation of california's proposition 65"

- use quotation marks to search for phrases with words in the order you typed them, like "social psychology"
- use AND to expand your search, like "john chapman AND child bride AND cider"

Advanced Search is a great way to cut down on the irrelevant or only vaguely related content that makes its way into your results. It's also a good method to limit your search to specific kinds of sites, like .gov or .edu websites, to increase the likelihood of receiving accurate and unbiased information. It can also display different file types, like excel or powerpoint documents, that might not have appeared in a regular search.

Subject Directories are vetted sources, used like regular search engines but the content is evaluated and sorted by real people, and so are great resources for getting a little more refined with your topic without the concern of misleading information being presented to you. the search methods are similar, and there are usually advanced search options to further refine your results or include different file types.
