The Bare Bones Guide to HTML

by Kevin Werbach
Version 1.0 -- April 2, 1995
After seeing several pleas in the comp.infosystems.www.providers newsgroup for a quick-and-dirty description of all the HTML tags, I decided to update the cheat sheet I had created for my own use to serve this purpose.

This document is designed to be as concise as possible, and therefore it doesn't go into any detail about how to use the various tags. There are numerous step-by-step HTML guides on the Web; a good place to find many of them is at http://union.ncsa.uiuc.edu:80/HyperNews/get/www/html.html

I have included virtually all of the HTML 2.0 tags (the current generally-accepted specification), as well as the popular -- but not standard -- Netscape extensions. Excluded for now are: some tags considered archaic, Netscape 1.1b's dynamic document tags, and a few tags that require more complex server interaction. There is a shorter version of this document available that only lists the most common tags.

Comments and suggestions are welcome; I hope to make this list as accurate and comprehensive as possible. You can e-mail me at werbach@access.digex.net . The latest version can be retrieved from my home page at http://www.access.digex.net/~werbach/home.html

Thanks to the following people for sending corrections to earlier versions:
