It seems like more and more your job is getting steeped in marketing. Have you
been noticing this yourself? I wonder then, if total quality is coming around
full circle so that it's not just a philosophy of management and org. structure,
but of marketing... and hasn't marketing theory pretty much always dealt with
total quality issues and just not titled them as "Total Quality?"

in response to Masa's comments:

"Producing software is fundamentally different from producing TV
or VCR. As you know, software can be copied easily which one might
call "software production". I have been thinking that software
production is essentially a design process. In this sense it is
similar to designing a new car or a new TV. Once it is designed,
it must be deployed which includes marketing, sales, support, and
consumer education. Of course, some discipline is still necessary,
but that's not all we need."

Producing software most likely IS very different from producing video or
television, however, I don't agree with the reason stated. Actually, video
and television is a very easily copied medium technologically. It's very easy
to record a broadcasted program, just as it is very easy to dub video tapes.
However, television and video is not **marketed** to be an easily copied or
distributed medium, as the distribution method is how people make money
(advertising or video sales). Again, this is not too dissimilar to software.
Still, the marketing strategies are very different. Software is meant to be
controlled primarily by the user, in terms of installation and use. Whereas,
video and television is meant to be controlled by the distributor and not so
much by the user. Nevertheless, the technologies are extremely similar.
