The Socratic Method

There are lots of techniques instructors can use to elicit active participation by students in the learning process.

You want your students to be excited about your topic. List some things you do when you teach that get them involved.

  • Name first ¹
  • Don't interrupt
  • Restate answers
  • Don't lock horns
  • Survey questions: reflect the results back
  • Collect nuggets about jobs, projects, etc.
  • A trainee answering a question is taking a risk.
  • Recognize good performance
  • There are no wrong answers: "You're on the right track..."
  • Run your radar...

1. Most people are not good at remembering names. Always call on people by name. Use the name tents; no one will mind. Be sure to have a name tent with your own name on it, too.
